RESEARCH REVEALS SKILLS SHORTAGE STILL A CONCERN FOR AUSTRALIAN BUSINESSES

New research by the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) has found that eight in 10 companies are concerned about the skills shortage impacting their organisation and/or
broader industry.

The research, conducted earlier this month, surveyed 760 Australian HR professionals and found that current challenges for businesses include navigating vaccination mandates, excess
leave balances and finding the right talent.

Sarah McCann-Bartlett, Chief Executive Officer, Australian HR Institute, said the research highlights just how challenging 2022 will be for many Australian businesses as they deal with a
skills shortage that extends to all levels of the business and a competitive job market.

“Businesses will face a number of pressures as we go into the new year, and the skills shortage is just one of them,” said McCann-Bartlett.

“In fact, a quarter of all organisations surveyed have stated that the vaccine conversation has caused a culture split in their workforce, while 40% are
unsure or still deciding which actions to take in relation to unvaccinated employees.”

McCann-Bartlett said this is an incredibly complex situation that needs careful consideration and management.

“Leaders and HR professionals need to be cognisant of how these pressures will impact their businesses and organisational culture so they can put the right structures, policies and plans in
place to minimise their impact,” added McCann-Bartlet.

The research found:

  • 6 in 10 (59%) of HR professionals say the vaccination status of job candidates will factor into their hiring decisions.
  • 1 in 4 (26%) say the vaccination conversation has caused a culture split in their workforce.
  • 1 in 3 (33%) expect an above-average number of staff taking holidays in 2022 and that  it will be ‘difficult to manage.
  • 40% are unsure or still deciding which actions to take regarding unvaccinated staff.  However, 27% have terminated contracts and 20% have created remote-only roles.
