O’Connor retains shadow WR portfolio

THE Australian Labor Party’s Brendan O’Connor has retained his position as the Shadow Employment and Workplace Relations Minister in a reshuffle announced by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten on Sunday.

Mr O’Connor said he looks forward to ‘continuing to advance the interest of working Australians’. He will be assisted by the newly appointed Shadow Assistant Minister for workplace relations, Lisa Chesters, Labor’s federal member for Bendigo since 2013. Prior to entering politics, Ms Chesters spent 10 years as a lead organiser with the United Voice union.

Mr Shorten also appointed member for Chifley, Ed Husic to Shadow Minister for Employment Services and Workforce Participation. Mr Husic also has a union background, having held the position of national president of the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union before entering politics.

“I was humbled to receive the support to become a Shadow Minister – and it is a huge honour to be given the opportunity to work in such a crucial portfolio,” Mr Husic said.

In other shadow ministry changes, Deputy Leader Tanya Plibersek will take on the education and women portfolios, relinquishing the role of Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister to Penny Wong.

Current Shadow Resources Minister Jason Clare’s responsibilities have expanded to Shadow Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, and the new Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment.

No longer holding responsibility for higher education, Kim Carr will be the Shadow Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.

Labor’s new shadow ministry comes a week after Coalition government ministers were sworn in following some portfolio changes announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The new parliament is due to sit for the first time on 30 August 2016.
