THE Australian Mines and Metals Association says the greater attraction and retention of women will play a key role in filling skills shortages in the resource sector.
Industry forecasts suggest more than 90,000 new jobs will be created on major mining and related construction projects by 2016. “This is being driven by over $680 billion of investment either underway or slated for
Australian resource projects,” AREEA chief executive Steve Knott said.
“There are a plethora of opportunities for women, particularly those with specialised skills, among this activity and our sector must improve on its 16 per cent female representation in the total workforce.”
