Resource employers recognised for safety excellence

AREEA congratulates a number of member companies recognised for excellence across health and safety.

Twelve finalists have been announced for the WA Safety and Health Resources Sector Awards, including AREEA members Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine, Newmont Mining, Fortescue Metals Group and Roy Hill Holdings.

The finalists have demonstrated a commitment to worker safety and mitigating risks, with Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine for its reduction of sprains and strains in the mining industry, Newmont Mining’s Newmont Boddington Gold Health and Safety Representative Mentoring Program, Fortescue Metals Group’s Controlling Energy Sources – Mobile Maintenance initiative and Roy Hill Holdings for its Lightning Protection System.

AREEA wishes members the best of luck ahead of the announcement of winners on October 25.

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s (DMIRS) Safety and Health Resources Sector Awards and focus on Innovative engineering and improvements in safety.

It comes after another AREEA member, New Hope Group, scooped up three 2018 ABA100 Australian Business Awards for its innovative work in x-ray technology and automatic braking systems and its contribution to community.

The Dry Sorting Machine coal trial at New Acland was awarded for its innovation.

The company was recognised in the Business Innovation category for its trial of x-ray sorting technology at the New Acland Mine, improving the quality of coal before it is processed through the mine’s wash plant.

In the same category, New Hope’s Jeebropilly Mine was recognised for its Automatic Braking System, a failsafe braking design that ensures safe passage of mining equipment underneath road overpasses and bridges.

Developed on-site by Jeebropilly’s maintenance team, the technology has since been installed across the site’s mining fleet.

New Hope was also a winner in the Community Contribution category for its work in communities around its operations, including its commitment to local procurement, industry skills programs and community consultation.
