Tech focus to nurture our industry’s next-gen workforce

A new Research Training Centre is aiming to deliver the next generation of scientists and engineers in sensors, data analytics and artificial intelligence to increase value in the mining and processing of complex resources.

Zeqi Li is a PhD student working on making grinding technology more efficient and less energy intensive.

Based at The University of Adelaide, the ARC Training Centre for Integrated Operations for Complex Resources will work to increase value in mining through innovative applications of ‘lean processing’.

The four-year $11.75 million project involves three universities and 18 industry partners through the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Program, and will develop and deliver vital enabling tools for automated, integrated and optimized mining.

It aims to foster close partnerships between researchers and end-users to provide innovative Higher Degree by Research and postdoctoral training for industries that are vital to Australia’s future.

ARC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sue Thomas said ARC Training Centres play an important role in creating a place where researchers can collaborate with industry partners and participate in graduate level training in Industrial Transformation Priority areas.

“The ARC Training Centre for Integrated Operations for Complex Resources will work to maximise productivity, reduce risk on product quality and train the next generation of highly qualified people capable of bridging the gap between the information and operations technology realms.,” she said.

Researchers in the centre will work closely with Curtin University and the University of South Australia – collaborating with other participating Australian and international organisations.

The centre brings together end-users, translation partners and researchers, and will equip the next generation of scientists and engineers through mentoring programs, career relevant training, industry placements, collaboration with partner organisations and participation in world-leading inter-disciplinary research.

Early career researchers, early career professionals and PhD scholars will be trained at the centre, which will also run outreach projects promoting STEM to high school students.

Driving a brighter skills future for our industry

AREEA is pleased to see efforts to promote the resources and energy industry’s suite of technologically-advanced jobs required to fuel the industry’s pipeline of growth into the future.

AREEA’s Bright Future Stem program is continuing to raise awareness of our industry’s opportunities from an early age, targeting 9-12 year olds, in turn hoping to pique an interest in careers and programs such as the ARC Training Centre for Integrated Operations for Complex Resources.

The program is continuing its success in encouraging students across Australia to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

By bringing STEM subjects to life through a series of stimulating activities and industry role models (particularly female), students gain an understanding of how STEM links back to real jobs in the resources and energy industry.

Why should your organisation get involved?

  • Boost your organisation’s profile and engagement with local communities, schools, teachers, parents, and students that will become our sector’s next-gen workforce.
  • Promote your organisation’s interest in STEM careers and the diverse and rewarding employment opportunities within the resources and energy industry.

If your company is interested in participating in the program, we would love to hear from you.
