THE AUSTRALIAN Government’s Department of Home Affairs has published updates to the Short-term Skilled Occupation List and the Medium-Long Term Strategic Skills List, following the latest round of consultation in November last year.

Despite business community concerns tabled during the November consultations, the department has appeared to make no changes to the occupations that were the focus of the resources and energy industry’s submission.

A summary of the changes can be found here.

This outcome is not entirely surprising given the department’s indication that it was prioritising continuity and stability in this round of review due to the substantial changes to the skilled migration occupation lists in April and July 2017.

The department has announced that a new regional occupations list is currently under development. It said that the additional list will come into effect with the introduction of the new Temporary Skills Shortage visa in March 2018 and will ‘help ensure regional employers are well supported’ (see article).

AMMA will continue to work with members to convey your feedback and concerns to the government.
