AREEA has prepared, for the general use of its members, a template letter to provide FIFO employees to assist with their interstate travel to and from work during the COVID-19 travel restrictions enacted by various state and territory governments on March 20-24.

AREEA members should copy and paste this template onto their company letterheads and issue to employees considered “essential travellers” and thus considered exempt from the various state / territory border restrictions enacted in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Download the template letter here: https://www.areea.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/2020-03-26_AREEA_Template_Exemption_letter_all_state_borders_v2.docx

Background

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the governments of Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania have each each signed directions under various emergency laws giving effect to border control measures.

Information about the measures for each state/territory can be found at the links below:

Importantly, the declarations reflect that essential resource sector employees travelling in and out of each state / territory will be exempt from the strict new quarantine rules.

The definitions of “essential travellers” are almost identical and include specialists required for business continuity / maintenance, persons required to maintain or repair critical infrastructure, persons employed in primary industries and persons ordinarily required to travel interstate for work purposes.

AREEA members with operations in each state / territory are strongly advised to review the declarations in detail paying particular attention to these definitions.
