Business to discuss energy at Chamber roundtable

Business representatives and industry groups will come together next week to discuss a range of key energy-related industry issues ahead of the Federal Election.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry will host the Energy Roundtable Meeting, to be attended by Federal Minister for Energy Angus Taylor.

A number of industry issues of relevance for many resources and energy employers on the agenda for discussion include:

  1. COAG Energy Council outcomes – Retailer reliability obligation
  2. Energy Market Misconduct Legislation
  3. Recommendations of the ACCC Retail Electricity Pricing Inquiry
  4. Investment incentives for base-load capacity and renewables
  5. Trends in Contracted Capacity Arrangements
  6. Gas Market Reforms
    1. Declared wholesale gas market
    2. Gas supply and pricing issues

While the National Energy Guarantee has been abandoned by the Coalition, employers remain hopeful of energy policy certainty and stability.

The meeting follows the COAG Energy Council late last year recognising the importance of bringing power prices and emissions down while planning for the security and reliability of the power grid.

“Business has been beating down the doors of federal, state and territory politicians, calling on them to work together in a consistent way to get the price of power down and get reliability up; and reduce emissions to meet our international commitments while ensuring that we do not threaten Australia’s international competitiveness,” Australian Chamber CEO, James Pearson, said.

The recommendations of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Retail Electricity Pricing Inquiry Report, released in July last year, will also be a hot point of discussion.
