AREEA thanks Matt Canavan for support and commitment

Australian Resources and Energy Group AREEA thanks Senator the Hon. Matthew Canavan for his longstanding support and commitment to the Australian resources industry, after the Queensland Senator yesterday stood down from his Cabinet position as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia.

“Senator Canavan has been a strong supporter of AREEA, our members and the Australian resources and energy industry since being elected to the Senate in 2013,” Steve Knott, Chief Executive of AREEA, said.

“We have enjoyed an especially close relationship with Senator Canavan since his appointment as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia in 2016.

“Over this period he has achieved great things for the industry, not the least leading the Resources 2030 Taskforce in 2018 and developing the first National Resources Statement in over 20 years. AREEA was proud to have played a strong consultative role in that process.

“Senator Canavan should be extremely proud of all he has achieved as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia.

“It’s clear he understands how important the resources industry is to supporting communities across regional Australia, and that for our regional areas to prosper, both resources and agriculture must co-exist and cooperate.

“We wish him all the best for the next phase of his parliamentary career.”

In a statement today, Senator Canavan reiterated his support for the Nationals,  the Coalition Government and for regional Australia.

“Over the last decade the Nationals have done an amazing job in growing our support and helping consolidate a Coalition government. We have done that by forcefully ignoring the loud Australians that want to glibly take away people’s jobs, stop people from developing their own land and deride the basic family values that keeps communities tight,” he said.

“Instead we are building dams, coal fired power stations, new roads and supporting families. Over the last decade the Nationals have become the true party of the worker. The people we fight for are those that wear bright orange, bright yellow and even bright pink.”

Senator Canavan will remain the Nationals Party deputy leader in the Senate.
