ON 28 March 2013, AREEA made a submission opposing the Fair Work Amendment (Tackling Job Insecurity) Bill 2012, arguing that casual and contract based forms of employment are legitimate and essential work practices in Australian workplaces.
This is a private members Bill that was tabled by Greens MP Adam Bandt.
The Bill seeks to amend the Fair Work Act 2009 to provide employees and unions with the right to pursue ‘secure employment arrangements’ from their employer. The Fair Work Commission would be empowered to make ‘secure employment orders’ that force the employer to provide permanent employment to casual and contract workers.
AREEA’s submission strongly opposed the Bill in its entirety and argued that casual and contract based forms of employment are legitimate and essential work practices that have long played a role in Australian workplaces. They should not be demonised. AREEA highlighted the role that contract work plays in delivering major resource projects on time and on budget.
