AMMA Win on Super Saves Thousands of Aussie Jobs

Changes to the superannuation system by the Tax Office had the potential to destroy thousands of Aussie jobs in the resources sector.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO) had planned changes to the Superannuation Guarantee which would make 9 per cent superannuation payments payable on rostered overtime.

Such a situation would have jeopardised thousands of Aussie jobs – as the capacity of many businesses to keep many of their workers in a job would have been undermined by higher superannuation costs.

AMMA was the first body to raise this issue with the Minister and the ATO.

AMMA also arranged for a legal challenge to the ATO. This action played a pivotal role in the ATO changing its position.

In times of economic uncertainty, the decision not to include rostered overtime in ordinary time earnings will save thousands of jobs and save the Australian economy millions of dollars each year.
