Earlier this month, the Department of Home Affairs published updates to the Short‑term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), and the Regional Occupation List (ROL).
The Department of Jobs and Small Business regularly reviews the skilled migration occupation lists to ensure they are responsive to Australia’s labour market needs.
It comes after the government announced last April that it would abolish the longstanding 457 scheme as part of major reforms to Australia’s temporary skilled migration program.
As part of industry consultation, AREEA continues to provide further information and evidence in relation to the remaining occupations ineligible for skilled migration under either list.
AREEA focused its attention on those occupations identified as high priority by AREEA members, in particular drilling and maritime industry roles.
Unfortunately, the most recent update shows none of the occupations identified by members as of concern to the resources and energy sector have been flagged for change.
AREEA intends to provide further information and evidence in relation to the remaining occupations that formed the basis of advocacy that are still ineligible for skilled migration under these lists.
A summary of the recent changes can be found here along with updated combined list of occupations also available from the Department of Home Affairs website.
The next update to the skilled migration occupation lists is expected to occur in mid-2019. .
Updates will also be published on the Department’s Skilled Migration Occupation List webpage.
