Gillard commits to 12% telework target

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has marked National Telework Week with a target to have 12 per cent of public servants regularly working from home by 2020.

Running from 12 – 16 November, National Telework Week is aimed at increasing awareness of telework and encouraging employers to boost the number of people working from home, in conjunction with the introduction of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

“The NBN will help unlock the potential of telework to boost productivity in the workplace; reduce commuting time and urban congestion; and allow employers to compete for the best employees, no matter where they are located.,” a government statement said.

The take-up of telework is part of the government’s National Digital Economy Strategy, which aims to position Australia as one of the world’s leading digital economies.

Information, tools and resources to help with to support with the implementation of telework, such a as an ROI tool to calculate the potential savings from a telework program is available through the government’s new website Telework: Bringing home the benefits of a new way to work.
