Scholarship support offers resource employers top women recruits

The Australian Women in Resources Alliance (AWRA) and Skills Queensland invite resource employers to support an important scholarship program by providing practical assistance to talented women eager to break into male-dominated industries.

The Supporting Women Scholarships are offered by the Queensland Government to assist women to undertake study, and ultimately employment, in fields traditionally under-represented by women and experiencing skills shortages.

Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek recently announced that provisional offers for the Supporting Women Scholarships have been sent, with 141 women selected from the almost 400 applicants.

27 of the scholarship offers went to women looking to change careers, 25 went to women who were returning to study and 89 were offered to school leavers.

Employers are invited to register interest to support scholarship recipients throughout their studies, by a establishing a relationship with a scholarship holder and providing addition practical support.

Practical support might be any of:

  • providing work experience or vacation work
  • offering a recipient a graduate position
  • extending invitations to recipients to relevant industry or professional networking events
  • supporting professional development, such as sponsoring a scholarship recipient to attend industry events such as awards nights, or other opportunities
  • sponsoring student membership of a relevant professional association or peak body
  • providing site tours to expose scholarship recipients to real workplaces
  • enabling students to “shadow” someone in your workplace for a day or two, or
  • support mentoring by a member of your team, and/or
  • funding additional scholarships to increase the numbers studying in your field.

AWRA Program Manager Gina Meibusch said the scholarships bolster the pool of talent and provide skills-strapped industries such as resources the ability to reap the benefits of increased participation of women workers.

“Resource employers have the opportunity to attract future employees, contribute to real skills and experience of graduates and show support for women working in non-traditional fields,” Ms Meibusch said.

Skills Queensland Chief Executive Rod Camm welcomed the support of AWRA

“These scholarships target areas of resource industry skills needs, including engineering and geology. Real experience in the workplace is critical to helping the scholarship recipients to succeed,” Mr Camm said.

“The AWRA network has a unique opportunity to engage with and develop their future workforce through this partnership and the Supporting Women Scholarships.”

The scholarships, worth up to $20 000, are provided to women for up to four years while they study at any level from Certificate IV to postgraduate, in any of the following areas:

  • agricultural science,
  • architecture,
  • building services,
  • engineering,
  • geology, or
  • information technology.

Recipients will be ready to engage with resource companies soon after March 2013 and applications for the second round of the scholarships is expected to open in August 2013 for study commencing in 2014.
