ACCI calls for reform to secure economic future

THE Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called upon the next Australian government to commit to a reform agenda supporting productivity and economic growth in a paper released to Parliament House last week.

Aiming to boost private sector output following a decade of decline in productivity and competitiveness, Getting on with Business: Reform Priorities for the next Australian Government urges a whole-of-government reform focusing on five key priorities:

  • • A stronger economy;
  • • Raising productivity and competitiveness;
  • • Accessing global markets;
  • • Better functioning institutions; and
  • • Supporting small business.

ACCI, of which AREEA is a member, provides 101 recommendations in the blueprint, targeting wealth creation ahead of planned government spending.

“Both major parties have written big cheques for extra social policy out to the end of the decade, but since the money’s not in the bank we need to create new wealth to pay our way and secure living standards,” chief executive Peter Anderson said.

“Getting On With Business is an agenda that unashamedly says building the confidence and capacity of the private sector must be the central operating principle of the next government.”

Some of the specific recommendations include:

  • Greater workforce participation with less welfare reliance;
  • More competitive banking and energy markets;
  • Lower and better targeted taxes as budget conditions permit;
  • More private sector people in government and parliament;
  • Tertiary education spending linked to industry skill needs;
  • Changes to the Fair Work Act;
  • Restoration of employer incentives for offering apprenticeships; and
  • A review of future superannuation levy rises.
