Australia’s peak resource industry employer group celebrated excellence with sector leaders gathered on the West Coast for AREEA’s 2017 Gala Dinner and Industry Awards presentation 22 August, 2017.

AREEA CEO Steve Knott AM said the calibre of the entries was exceptional.

“These awards are an opportunity to reflect on best practice, innovation and excellence in our sector,” he said.

“Judges had no easy task in selecting the winners and this is an indication of the good work occurring at an individual and company level, setting Australia up as a global leader in employee and employer management.

“It’s a testament to our companies, our industry leadership and the opportunities being created in these challenging times.”

Fortescue Metals Group won the prestigious AWRA – Australian Women in Resources Alliance Award.

“The diversity initiatives set in place at Fortescue Metals Group are a positive step in addressing the inequality for women in the resources and energy sector workplaces,” Mr Knott said.

“Only 13 per cent of our industry are women – that is not good enough.

“Programs run by Fortescue are a shining example of best practice to increase the number of women in the sector’s workforce and we’re proud to recognise this leadership with a prestigious national award.”

Fortescue Metals Group senior media and corporate affairs specialist Jessica Bukowski said the company was proud of its diversity strategies.

“Supporting women in the workplace directly enhances Fortescue’s success by diversifying its thinking,” she said.

“We have worked hard to implement practical policies such as flexible working arrangements, child care support and career training and development opportunities at work while fostering a culture that truly embraces diversity and champions throughout the workplace.”

Fortescue Chief Executive Officer, Mr Nev Power said the company was very proud to be recognised for its commitment to building a diverse workplace by receiving the Australian Women in Resources Alliance (AWRA) award.

“We are focused on providing practical solutions to ensure women can grow professionally and have the support and flexibility to have a career and family. We want to make a real difference by creating a welcoming, supportive and encouraging environment for women,” Mr Power said.

Hannah Campbell from Incitec Pivot Limited (IPL) was named the 2017 Young Professional, in recognition of her leadership in her role as Moranbah Operations Readiness Coordinator, where she has led the planning and execution of plant shutdown and decommissioning.

“Hannah’s capacity is phenomenal as this was the largest turnaround executed in Incitec Pivot’s Australian manufacturing history with 94,000 man hours,” Peter Henderson, Site Manager, Moranbah said.

“In addition, the work Hannah did left a legacy for both the site and the IPL Turnaround Management System (TMS).

“She took the best of TMS and integrated it into site maintenance outages and daily operations.

“She expanded the TMS operations function to include the best practice processes developed during the turnaround and mentored the lead from the next IPL turnaround to get on-the-job experience.”

Heathgate Resources won the Indigenous Employment and Retention Award for its dynamic education program which gives Adnyamathanha school students the skills, opportunities, belief and confidence to finish school.

The program is designed to also give the students a greater understanding of the resources industry and provide them with an opportunity to work on their land while gaining skills for the future.

Morris Corporation received the Training and Development Award for its 3Bs of ‘Be Friendly, Be Connected and Be Real’ program which enhanced the company’s customer service model.

Chief Executive Fiona Berkin said the company is proud of its initiative and the award is recognition of the team effort in optimising the program.

McDermott Australia was awarded the Health and Wellbeing Award for its FIFOcus program which has exceeded expectations and contributed to astounding change for offshore workers. Some achievements include:

  • Supervisors speaking up to their crew members about personal mental health issues and difficult times;
  • Individuals losing up to 6kg in weight as part of structured weight loss challenges;
  • Personnel utilising the quit smoking campaign aids, and one whom quit a 25-year habit;
  • Regular attendance at social events held on board like quiz/trivia sessions;
  • The participation of crew’s family/children in activities offered to engage the company’s wider offshore community which impacts greatly on the health and wellbeing of its direct personnel.

“Our FIFOcus program caters to a mainly male-dominated offshore workforce often misrepresented as ‘macho men whose bravado inhibits them from displaying a state of emotional or mental distress’,” Stephen McMahon, Principal HR Generalist McDermott Australia said.

“McDermott is incredibly proud of the FIFOcus Program and the visible impact it is having on the health and wellbeing of our offshore workforce.

“We believe the results speak for themselves and success has been measured not by us in the office, but by those whom the program targets, the crew members themselves and their families.”

“It has exceeded expectations and contributed to astounding change for our offshore workforce.”
