WorkChoices reforms enacted

The Federal Government's Workplace Relations Amendment (WorkChoices) Bill 2005 has now been enacted. The Bill was passed by Parliament on 7 December 2005 and received royal assent on 14 December 2005.



The Federal Government's Workplace Relations Amendment (WorkChoices) Bill 2005 has now been enacted. The Bill was passed by Parliament on 7 December 2005 and received royal assent on 14 December 2005.

Amendments made to the Bill include extending the life of greenfield agreements with unions up to five years, providing protection for workers who have reasonable grounds for refusing to work on public holidays, requiring that the total number of employees employed by related bodies corporate be included when calculating whether the under 100 employees unfair dismissal exemption prevails, providing that 'preserved award matters' will prevail in addition to the Australian Fair Pay Commission's standard, and setting the date of royal assent as the operative date for the Australian Fair Pay Commission.
