AMMA writes to Julia Gillard with proposal on Global No Disadvantage Test
10-May-2007
AMMA yesterday wrote to Deputy Leader of the Labor Party, Julia Gillard, and proposed the retention of AWAs under a Global No Disadvantage Test. As reported in The Age today, AMMA Chief Executive Steve Knott stated: ‘If they (the ALP) can’t agree to this, the debate will very much become one about union power, because clearly no one’s worse off’.

A copy of correspondence sent from AMMA to the Deputy Leader yesterday can be accessed by clicking here.

In summary the correspondence highlights that:

• AMMA’s preference is for the retention of WorkChoices AWAs – an option consistently rejected by the ALP.

• AMMA members, with some additional administrative costs, previously passed the ‘global no disadvantage test’ that was in place prior to the introduction of WorkChoices.

• As an alternative to the WorkChoices AWAs, and subject to retaining all other legislative machinery aspects associated with existing AWAs (refer correspondence), AMMA members would pass the ‘old global no disadvantage test’. Under such a test there could be no dispute that workers would be worse off when compared with core award safety net minima.
