Andrew has 29 years’ experience as an industrial
relations/employee relations practitioner, including 17 years with Hamersley
Iron, mainly working as their industrial advocate in the Western Australian
Industrial Relations Commission. He also worked for five years as a Barrister
and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Australia.
Andrew has been an integral member of teams that have
managed major projects including the Hamersley Iron closed shop dispute in
1992 (credited with bringing about the de-unionisation of the Pilbara), the Hamersley
Iron All Staff Program in 1993 (which removed shop floor employees from the
award system so they could be employed on staff contracts), and the Weipa
Dispute 1995-1996.
At AMMA, Andrew has assisted members with representation
before tribunals and in negotiations, by providing legal and strategic advice
on employment matters and in drafting agreements.
In representing members he has appeared before the Australian and Western Australian Industrial Relations
Commissions, the Equal Opportunity Commission, the State Administrative
Tribunal (and prior to its absorption into the State Administrative Tribunal,
the Equal Opportunity Tribunal), and the South Australian Industrial Court.
Prior to joining Hamersley Iron Andrew plied his trade as an advocate
primarily in Magistrates’ Courts and the Family Court.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of
Laws and has completed training in effective negotiation skills, employment law,
employment law in the workplace, Equal Employment Opportunity, and developing
and implementing EEO.
In providing advice and support to AMMA’s members, Andrew’s
particular expertise is in arbitration and negotiation and the provision of
advice in the implementation of workplace change.
