Each October,
AMMA publishes an overview of the services it has provided to and on behalf of
its members during the year just ended. A copy of the most recent report is
available in the publications section.
AMMA is a member-driven
organisation. Our membership consists of more than 300 major resource sector
employers, including some of the largest employers in Australia. Whilst many members share common interests, the diversity of those interests is never
compromised by binding members to collective
decisions.
AMMA is
governed by a Board of Directors drawn from the ranks of its
members.

The Board is
supported by AMMA’s Board Reference Group, which is made up of senior
Directors, human resources and employee relations practitioners currently
working for AMMA member companies. It has two purposes:
§
to keep the AMMA
Board informed of strategic human resource and employee relations issues
confronting the resource sector; and
§
to carry out
research and project work, as directed by the Board.
The Board
Reference Group plays a key role in identifying current and emerging human resource
and employee relations issues. It then provides strategic input into the
development of any industry position on those issues, for example on
transmission of business.
The Group also
closely monitors issues of union coverage and representation. In this capacity,
it is able to ensure that any adverse impacts on the resource sector are
identified and minimised.
AMMA’s Board
Reference Group is currently drawn from members including Queensland Alumina
Ltd, Skilled Group, ExxonMobil Australia Pty Ltd, Fluor Australia Pty Ltd,
Newcrest Mining Ltd, Woodside Energy Ltd, P&O Maritime Services, Boart
Longyear Pty Ltd, Compass Group (Aust) Pty Ltd, Universal Sodexho Pty Ltd, HWE
Mining Pty Ltd, Santos Ltd, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, Thiess, Alcoa World
Alumina Australia, OZ Minerals, and Newmont Asia Pacific.

In order for
us to continue to provide quality services using innovative approaches AMMA has
developed a number of initiatives, several of which are described below.
Quality
assurance: AMMA has
ISO 9001 accreditation. This is part of an overall business strategy to ensure
AMMA adopts quality assurance processes, as a means of maintaining our
competitive edge. This reinforces AMMA’s commitment to being the leading
provider of human resource and employee relations services to the resource
sector.
Use of
technology: AMMA
endeavours to use contemporary technology to ensure that it remains accessible
to all members. Our latest initiative is conducting Member Forums online via
the internet. This service provides a cost-effective and efficient means for
members located in remote areas to stay in touch with employee relations
developments.
Our
initiatives in action: Over
the years, AMMA has always been at the forefront in addressing the issues that
are critical to our members in the resource and allied sectors. AMMA’s
research papers all receive substantial attention and make a major contribution
to the national employee relations management debate.
In 2007 AMMA
released three new research papers:
§
AWAs:
A Major Matter for Miners , a paper which argues in favour of the
retention of individual statutory contracts;
§
The AMMA
Workplace Relations Scorecard, which provides the resources sector’s
views on the key elements that ought to be present in any political party’s
workplace relations policy; and
§
Constructing
Lawful Workplaces, a research paper on the current compliance framework
within Australian industrial relations.
Our position
papers have dealt with topics such as reform options for workplace relations
legislation and the case for ongoing flexibility in employment relations. These
may be accessed on our publications page.
The Australian
Mines and Metals Association (AMMA) operates, pursuant to the Corporations Law,
as a not-for-profit organisation.
